President Bola Tinubu was Tuesday called upon to curtail the excesses of the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, following the crisis rocking Rivers State House of Assembly.
It is not clear whether Wike, the immediate past go Ernie of the state, is behind the imbroglio.
However, the Ijaw National Congress is mooting that what transpired was Wike’s grand plot to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The INC, in a press statement signed by its president, Prof Benjamin Ogle Okaba, stated that, “The congress considers this development very worrisome and capable of generating an unwarranted state of insecurity and instability that can throw the entire Niger Delta and the Nigerian economy into serious crises.
“The INC condemns in its entirety this barbaric, selfish, nepotic and unconstitutional act capable of derailing the process of democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
“The INC calls on Mr President and Commander in Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to call his FCT minister to order. The INC also calls on all jaw sons, daughters and friends to rally their support for the governor of River state as an injustice to one jaw man is an injustice to over forty million Ijaw people worldwide.”
Okaba added that, “The ljaw Nation is watching closely and will act decisively and appropriately at the right time.”
Our correspondent reports that Gov Fubara and Wike met with President Tinubu today. It is being speculated that the meeting is connected with the crisis in Rivers.
Recall that youths, under the aegis of Ijaw Youth Leaders of Thought, earlier warned Wike against plots to impeach Governor Fubara.
In a statement signed by Comrade Jackson Agbor and Moses Omare, chairman and secretary general respectively, the youths said, “We condemn in totality the way and manner the governor of Rivers State, H.E Sim Fubara, was treated by men of the Nigeria Police Force; a situation where water and teargas was poured on him at the early hours of Monday is highly unacceptable.
“We call on the Inspector-General of Police to call his men to order and advise them to be professional and unbiased in their dealings. We express our optimum displeasure against Barr. Nyesom Wike for instigating ongoing unrest in Rivers government.
“Wike trying to bring another Ikwere man as Governor through the backdoor will be resisted by all. Rivers State is not Wike’s private estate. The Ijaws have supported all past Ikwere governors to complete their respective tenures and ours cannot be an exception.
“We therefore call on all Ijaw sons and daughters in Rivers State, in respective of party affiliations, to rise up to defend Governor Sim Fubara. An injury to one is injury to all. We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call on his minister for FCT, Barr Nyesom Wike, to order. If there is any breakdown of law and order, he should be held responsible because Ijaw youths will fight with their last drop of blood to stop the impeachment against Governor Sim Fubara.
“Therefore, we are calling on Ijaw Youths to resist any form of intimidation and fight back to defend our Ijaw governor in Rivers State.”
