The Benue State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly beaten to pulp a lecturer of a polytechnic in Makurdi, Benue State. The lecturer’s attack followed allegations that he stole someone’s private organ.
Dr Emmanuel Aime, lecturer at Alfred Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi, was beaten by irate youths for an alleged organ theft on Wednesday.
The state police public relations officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, adding that two persons had been arrested in connection with the attack on the lecturer.
It was gathered that the victimised lecturer is a pastor with the Living Faith Church in Makurdi.
The PPRO said, “What a shame to some youths! They don’t have respect for the law, elders or anybody. How can this happen in this generation?”
Anene called on traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, including every other stakeholder to rise against the barbaric acts by educating their people.
She added, “This is too bad. Two suspects have been arrested and they will be dealt with according to the law.”
Our correspondent reports that the lecturer was stripped almost naked. He reportedly came out of a bank along Bank Road and was thereafter accosted by one of the members of a syndicate who raised alarm over his missing penis and within a twinkle of an eye, other members of the group surrounded the lecturer and started beating him.
Save for police intervention, the victim would have been lynched, police said.
It was also gathered that the suspected syndicate usually station its members around banks to extort people who withdraw money from the bank.
They would send one of them to approach their victim and start raising false alarm on organ theft and all of them will gather to assault the person by collecting his phones and money before fleeing the scene, an insider said.
