Saturday’s emergence of Hon Chijioke Edeoga as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu State ahead of the 2023 general elections has kept people talking.
Edeoga, a lawyer, is the immediate past commissioner for environment in the state. He also served as commissioner for local government matters in the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration.
He contested the guber primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, and lost to Barr Peter Mba.
Ifeanyi Onah, a businessman, said, “Edeoga joining LP is a good development. The time to bury PDP and APC has come.
“PDP and APC deceived Ndigbo. We should reject them both at the state and national levels.
“I wish Labour Party would take over South East. It is a revolution. We want the calibre of Edeoga to fly the flag of Labour Party across other states of the federation.”
Cajetan Ogbonnia said, “We are praying for the best to emerge as leaders in Enugu. I know that God will answer our prayers. We pray for leaders that have human feelings. We don’t want leaders that impoverish us.”
An analyst, Tony Agbo, told newsmen that, “It’s an eye-opener for our leaders. People are dissatisfied over the years. The wave with which people embrace Labour Party tells me that the change has come.
“Should we go for free and fair elections, you will be amazed that both PDP and APC will go aground. They have finished this country.”
A student, Michael Obasi, said, “Let Edeoga be firm. PDP will be buried in Enugu State and the entire South East because of their selfishness. They don’t care about the plight of the governed.”
For Ik Ogbodo, “It’s time to test our democracy. It’s between the leaders and the real masses. Let us use our votes wisely. I want Labour Party to take over the entire South East.”
The chairman of Labour Party in Oji-River LGA, Dr Mc Ginger Ibeneme, told EverydayNews that, “We got a rallying point. Edeoga has experience in the act of governnace having worked in government.
“He has first hand exposure on the challenges one would face governing the state. His emergence will also address the issue of the minority in the power sharing arrangement of Enugu State where the so-called zoning does not recognize the minority.
“Labour Party is about shaking the table, confronting the system. Anybody who feels he is able, just like Peter Obi, should try it out with his party.
“PDP primary was monetized and the rules were not clear. The method applied in adopting the guber candidate was shrouded in uncertainties. Like Peter Obi, Edeoga was not satisfied and he decided to side with the people.
“We are tired of politics of give and take. We want a free and fair election where the people can freely vote for their preferred candidates and hold them responsible when they fail to perform.”
