Unknown Gunmen Kill Cop, Burn Patrol Van At Nsukka

By Our Correspondent

A yet-to-be-identified policeman was Friday killed when unknown gunmen attacked a police unit at Umeano junction by Ibagwa road at Nsukka, Enugu State.

The attack sparked confusion among the residents as they scampered for safety.

ADADA REPORTERS reported that Keke and Okada operations in two neighbouring local governments of Igboeze North and Igboeze South, which share boundaries with Nsukka, were recently restricted from operating from 6pm to 6am due to increasing crime rates in the area.

The Beech junction where a truck belonging to BUA Cement was burnt two weeks ago leads to the junction where today’s killing took place.

An eye witness, on condition of anonymity, told WithinNigeriaNews that, “The unknown gunmen visited the police checkpoint at Umeano junction, shot one police officer and set their vehicle ablaze.

“I was going to Nkwo Ibagwa when I heard a bang at the junction. Suddenly, the policemen at the junction started running away and before you know it, their vehicle was set ablaze.

“There is virtually nobody on the road now even as today is Nkwo market day of the community.”

The state police public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls made to him for confirmation.
