The Senate chief whip, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, Wednesday, tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the agreement the federal government signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the lingering ASUU strike in Nigeria.
Public universities in Nigeria have been on strike since February this year due to the failure of the federal government to implement an agreement it entered with ASUU.
ASUU, Adadareporters gathered, wants the federal government to increase the funding of public universities to save Nigerian universities from imminent collapse.
Buhari’s failure to find solutions to the lingering strike is the lowest ebb of the APC government, a lecturer, Prof Turaki Yerima, told our correspondent in Kaduna.
Orji Kalu, echoing the same disappointment via his Facebook post, said, “Incessant strikes disrupt the academic calendar, encourage brain drain and contribute significantly to the poor quality of graduates in the country, with far-reaching implications for national development.
“The federal government should urgently take all necessary measures to open a realistic negotiation with ASUU to stop the strike and implement the signed agreements in the interest of our students, their parents, the education sector and the Country.
“We must stop playing with the future of our youths.”
