Residents of Anambra State, Wednesday, expressed shock over the sudden death of the majority leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr Nnamdi Okafor.

The deceased, until his death in South Africa, was the member representing Awka South Constituency One and one of the ranking members of the legislature.

He was reported to have collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday in a hotel at Standton City, Johannesburg, South Africa, and was confirmed dead some hours later. The cause of his death was not stated.

His constituents and other residents of the state were thrown into confusion following his death.

“The spate of deaths in the Assembly is baffling to us,” Oliver Ugbor said.

Another resident, Cletus Okafor, said, “While we pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased and for God to give the bereaved family the strength to bear the loss, we also call for prayers against re-occuring deaths in the Assembly. It is quite unfortunate.”

It would be recalled that the Anambra State House of Assembly, about two months ago, buried the member representing Aguata Constituency One, Mr Okechukwu Okoye, who was abducted and beheaded by his captors.

This brings to four the number of deaths recorded by the legislative arm in the sixth and present seventh Assembly following the earlier incidents involving Mr Francis Mmegbuanaeze and Patrick Aniuno.
