The call by a certain Adamu Garba, reported to be an ex-presidential aspirant, for the renaming of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, after the late Queen Elizabeth II has attracted reactions.

The Queen’s death was announced Thursday after about 70 years on the throne.

Adamu Garba, in a tweet, said renaming UNN after the late monarch was to immortalise her.

According to him, “If I’m the president of Nigeria today, I’ll declare three days of national mourning for the death of the Queen Elizabeth II of England.

“Immortalizing Queen Elizabeth by renaming the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in her honor would’ve been an easier deal if I were communicating with our grandparents. Fortunately, they knew her worth.

“In order to immortalize Queen Elizabeth, we should rename the university to Queen Elizabeth University of Nigeria since it is the first university in Nigeria.”

Many who reacted described the call as ill-fated, and symbolically made to denigrade UNN. Recall that UNN also served as the University of Biafra during the Biafran Civil War.

Omotayo Adelakun, “I just wonder how these people reason…. ASUU is on strike, no student on campus, u are still talking about renaming…. O God of thunder, hot coal and brimstone where are u now!”

According to Ogbaka Ojofor, “Useless suggestion. Just rename Nigeria to republic of queen Elizabeth.”

Jack Makson stated, “Stupid and useless suggestions from the gotta.”

Sebastine Chinonso wrote, “Why not the University of Maiduguri or ABU Zaria?”

In view of Sharon Chizoba, “For their mind, why not the whole south east? Mad people everywhere.”
