PDP: Okowa Betrayed South, Wike Agitating For Equity – Discussants

By Adadainfo

Delta State Gov Ifeanyi Okowa’s accepting to become Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential elections betrayed the people of the southern region of Nigeria.

This was the view of discussants during ‘People’s Voices’, a political show of Enugu-based Dream FM monitored by our correspondent.

Barr Chijioke Agbo, a guest on the programme, said, “For the same Okowa who hosted PDP southern governors in Asaba where they agreed that the presidency of the PDP be zoned to South to turn around to become Atiku’s running mate is a betrayal.”

Another guest, Nick Ozonsi, assessed the position of Gov Nyesome Wike of River State that the national chairman of the PDP, Sen Iyorcha Ayu, should resign so that a southerner emerges for the sake of equity.

Ozonsi said, “Wike is agitating for equity. It is true he is one person, but he is speaking the minds of South South and South-East people. It is injustice for PDP to retain the positions of its presidential candidate and that of national chairman in the North.”

Callers during the programme described the announcement of former Senate president Adolphus Wabara as the new chairman of Board of Trustees of the PDP as a ‘chunk in a million’. According to them, it is a cosmetic approach in solving the abuses PDP has meted to South East.

A caller said, “It’s good for Peter Ob’s Labour Party to coast to victory. PDP is not fair to us. It will lose. Atiku lacks integrity to become Nigeria’s president.”

Recall that Wabara, a former president of the Senate, was Thursday announced as the new BoT chairman of PDP. He replaced Walid Jubrin who resigned. Jubrin’s tenure would have elapsed in about six months’ time, our correspondent gathered.
