The National Taskforce on Prohibition of Illegal, Importation/Smuggling of Arms, Ammunition, Light Weapons, Chemical Weapons and Pipeline Vandalism (NATFORCE) is now illegal.
This was disclosed after the national security council (NSC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Mr Rauf Aregbesola, minister of interior, the council disbanded the force because it is illegal.
The Senate in July passed a bill to establish a national commission for the coordination and control of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country. The House of Representatives is yet to pass the bill.
There has been a series of attacks across the country, including the unhindered invasion of the Kuje correctional facility by gunmen with some inmates freed.
