Students under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Monday, besieged the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, to press the federal government to reconcile its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The university teachers have been on strike since Feb 14 this year over FG’s failure to abide by the agreement it reached with the union.

Adegboye Olatununji, South-West coordinator of NANS, said the presence of security operatives would not deter their resolve to ground activities of various international airports in the country.

According to him, “They mobilised heavy security, but we’re undaunted. We are there on standby.”

Recall that Adegboye in a prior statement said students had lost patience with the federal government.

His statement read, “We call for the proper funding of the education sector as against what has been attainable in the past seven years.

“We call on the Buhari government to pay all outstanding arrears and salaries of lecturers. The policy of “No Work No Pay” is a fascist one; it’s therefore condemnable and non acceptable to all the millions of students in Nigeria!

“We will, by this statement, not beg again. We will be mobilizing all students to Shut Down the country (without excluding the Presidential villa). No Education, no movement!”

Our correspondent reports that the students, Monday, blocked the road leading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, after being blocked by security operatives from gaining entrance to the airport. The students however prevented traffic flow both inward and outward from the facility.

They were led by NANS National Taskforce on ASUU Strike chairman, Olumide Ojo. They were singing and dancing on the road.
