Bishop Augustine Ukwuoma of Orlu Catholic Diocese in Imo State has condemned the alleged killing of some residents of Imo and Anambra states on Saturday.
The incident occurred at Orsu-Ihiteukwa community in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State and Orsumugho, a community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. It is alleged that the killing was carried out by Nigerian troops.
The bishop’s condemnation was contained in a statement seen by our correspondent.
A source said the troops carried out the attack around 4am using combatant vans, armoured tankers and military helicopters, adding that the raid was carried out in collaboration with members of the Ebubeagu security outfit.
The statement read in part, “My sincere condolences to all families who lost loved ones during the painful incident.
“The burning down of Eke-Ututu Market has added another sad dimension to our existing bad situation. The burning down of this market has negatively touched the very core of the existence of these people who may be changed to a life of misery given the present economic strangulation we are in.
“I appeal to government authorities to investigate this incident and take necessary steps to prevent reoccurrence.”
Authorities of the Nigerian military are yet to make an official statement on the matter.
