As part of activities marking this year’s World Heart Day, Kanu Heart Foundation is embarking on free medical checks and treatment in Enugu, its founder said on Thursday.
Kanu, a former Nigeria Super Eagles caption, founded the foundation after he survived an open heart surgery when he newly signed a contract with Inter Milan of Italy from Ajax of Holland.
He said the foundation had so far sponsored over 600 indigent Nigerians on open heart surgeries overseas, with each of the costing at least 20, 000 UK pounds.
He commended the Enugu State government and the Nigeria Police for identifying with this year’s event being hosted in Enugu.
He called on the residents to take advantage of the rally, scheduled for Okpara Square to ascertain their health challenges and get free treatment. The rally will involve road walk across major parts of the state.
According to him, “We have been marking this event every 29th Sept in different states of the federation. We want to save lives. It is not a death penalty to have heart problems. When we find the victims, we treat them.
“I am a living testimony. I was diagnosed with a heart disease, and after my surgery, I still went ahead with my football career.”
Kanu and John Mikel Obi are the most decorated Nigerian footballers ever. Kanu won the African Footballer of the Year twice.
