The vice chairman, Labour Party, Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Wednesday, narrated how his car was burnt by yet-to-be-identified gunmen during his party’s meeting at Umuida community of the area.

He said, “On that fateful day, we were having a meeting at Umuida, Ozzi 7, Igboeze North LGA. I am not from that ward, but the officials of LP were embarking on ward tours across the LGA to see how they were faring. It was on 9th October, around 4pm.

“Suddenly some men surrounded us with guns. We managed to escape by all means. They made away with my own car and that of the ward chairman. My phone and my PA’s phone were also carried along. They got to some extent, and parked and burnt my own car. There were some LP documents in the car. Maybe that’s why they burnt the car because they didn’t burn that of the ward chairman. Till date, the ward chairman’s car has not been found.”

The victim, on condition of anonymity, called for true practice of democracy in Nigeria, which is enshrined in freedom of choice and the power of votes in determining leaders.

According to him, “Our journey into the Labour Party is to salvage the current problems in Nigeria. The common man does not have peace any longer in Nigeria, Enugu State and Igboeze North in particular.

“We have seen the capability in Mr Peter Obi, so we decided to be with him. We trust God that through him, the tears of suffering Nigerians will be wiped away. We are in Labour Party not to amass wealth; LP does not have money for now. Anyone you see in LP is not working for money, but to see if there will be a positive change in the country generally. We have been working tirelessly to see that all Peter Obi’s aims come to actualisation. This is a democratic country where everyone has freedom of choice. We should be at liberty to make our decisions so far it is not evil.”

He advised the perpetrators to have a change of heart to make Nigeria a better place.

Quoting him, “I don’t know who attacked us. Our aim is not to destroy the country, state or the local government. Our aim is simply to bring positive change. I don’t have any primary suspect. But if the attackers are politically motivated, the truth is that those people that sponsored them will not allow their children to engage in such.

“But if it is the handiwork of the opposition, I also want to advise them. If they are working for the success of the Igbo, they should also know that we are working for the same goal. We should jointly fight against our common enemies than fighting from within. Our mission is to restore peace and make life easier for all. If they are also working for the good of the people, LP shouldn’t be their target because we are fighting for the common good of the people. If you see what is happing in Igboeze North, I cry. Igboeze North is known previously for peace. It is no more like that today.”
