The zonal secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Southeast, Chief Hon James Ugwu, Thursday, said there was no opposition to Barr Peter Mba, PDP’s governorship candidate in Enugu State, ahead of the 2023 elections.
Chief Ugwu stated this in Enugu when the representative of Chief Paulinus Ozonnagbo, Chief Executive, Polystar Electronics, presented T-shirts and Caps to him for Ezechinyelugo Grassroots Movement aimed at bolstering Dr. Peter Mba’s votes during the elections. Chief Ugwu is the sponsor of the group.
According to him, the enthusiasm trailing Mba’s candidature is a confirmation of his wide acceptance, adding that, “Enugu State has been PDP since 1999, and it is not going to change. The outgoing governor has done very well.”
In his words, “When Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi came to power in 2015, he declared that he was going to develop rural areas. I don’t know any local government in the state that has no state government’s presence in terms of infrastructure: rural roads, hospitals, schools, health centres, empowerment or appointments. People forget easily.
“Don’t expect everybody to concentrate on the township. Gov Sullivan Chime did well in Enugu city centre, and Gov Ugwuanyi came in and decided to move to rural areas. Whoever is going for this election should tell us what he is coming with.
“We are not contesting with anybody. We are aware that votes will count, and started very early in ensuring that we drive our support base at grass roots. PVCs are prerequisite for our membership.”
Chief Godwin Obasi, the state coordinator of Ezechinyelugo Grassroots Support Group, said, “There are many qualities that we observed in Barr Mba. He is a galvaniser, industrialist and job creator. Enugu should be the hub of industry in Southeast. We also promised to provide adequate security of lives and property in the state. The first measure is the industrialisation of the state which he is championing.”
He said his group is embarking on grass-roots mobilisation for PVC collection across the state, noting that, “We are happy with BIVAS. It will guarantee one man, one vote. We are happy because it will bring out the true test of democracy, which is the will of the electorate.”
A member of the group, Hon Ejike Chukwudi Isaiah, urged youths in the state to shun thuggery during the elections. According to him, “The first weapon is to obtain our PVCs to vote the best candidates. We are optimistic that Barr Peter Mba has the ability to move Enugu State forward. Under Peter Mba, youths will have jobs.”
Our correspondent reports that Ezechinyelugo Grassroots Movement support group is spread across the 17 local government areas of the state, and the 260 wards in the state.
