The police public relations officer of Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Wednesday, confirmed the stabbing to death of a businessman by a labourer at Onitsha Main Market.

The incident, which occurred Tuesday evening, caused pandemonium at Onitsha Main Market. The labourer is from a northern state, a source said, adding that the deceased’s identity ‘is not yet known’.

It was gathered that the deceased contracted the labourer to offload his goods into his warehouse.

“No one knows what transpired, but suddenly the businessman was in pool of his blood, and his attacker escaped,” an eye witness said.

The furore almost resulted in an ethnic crisis, forcing some northerners within the area to seek refuge at a military barracks

DSP Ikenga said, “It’s a case of murder which happened at Bright Street, inside main market, around 4pm. Murder is murder, whoever that commits it will answer for it.

“I don’t have any information about the identity of the suspect but we will ensure that whoever that’s responsible is arrested and made to face the full wrath of law.”

He said security operatives were mobilised to the scene and discovered the man in the pool of his own blood.

He stated that, “He was rushed to the hospital where the doctors on duty confirmed him dead.

“Preliminary investigation shows that it’s a murder case and some persons have been fingered and we’re currently on their track to unmask and arrest them.”
