Residents of the university community of Nsukka in Enugu State, Monday, called on the authorities of Nsukka local government area to improve on their refuse evacuation.

According to them, refuse is gradually taking over highways and pathways in the metropolis due to the negligence of concerned authorities.

A trader, Anselm Idoko, said, “They are trying, but the frequency is poor. The population of Nsukka is high, so the authorities should up their efforts. They are not doing enough. At times they allow the refuse to submerge the roads.”

Tony Nkume, a teacher, said, “Let the clearing be done at least thrice a week. The cause of the current ugly sight is because the evacuation is done once a week. It makes Nsukka filthy. The local government has no excuse for these shortcomings.”

A tailor, Benjamin Ede, said, “Let the council chairman set up a taskforce to ensure that residents orderly deposit their refuse at designated places. Some of them carelessly throw their refuse bags by the roadsides. It’s unfair converting walkways into refuse dumps. The culprits should be charged to court to serve as a deterrent to others.”
