FIBA Women’s Afrobasket: Nigeria’s D’Tigress Defeat Senegal In Final

D’Tigress of Nigeria Saturday won the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament. The Nigerian ladies defeated Senegal by 84-74 to emerge champions.

The victory meant that D’Tigress have become only the second team ever after Senegal to win four consecutive titles.

D’Tigress won in 2017, 2019, 2021 and now 2023. The team showed brightness right from their first game against Congo DR. Their coach, Rena Wakama, is also the first female coach to win the Afrobasket title.

D’Tigress defeated hosts Rwanda in the semi-final before dealing a heavy blow on Senegal in the final game at the BK Arena in Kigali.

D’Tigress controlled the first quarter winning it 19-10 and still had the upper hand. With a 43-31 point lead at half time, D’Tigress were halfway through to achieving their target.

The Senegalese ladies however came hot after half time and they won the third quarter 26-19 to reduce Nigeria’s lead going into the final quarter to just five points.

Nonetheless, D’Tigress stepped up their game when it mattered most and they were able to destroy the stiff challenge from the Senegalese ladies.

D’Tigress won the last quarter 22-17 and effectively won the game 84-74.
