A professor of animal production and veterinary medicine, Nnaji Ajanwachukwu, weekend, said there are species of goats whose milk is more nutritious for human consumption than milk sourced from both human beings and cattle.
Ajanwachukwu, of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said the species involved produce large quantities of milk and lactate for a long time.
According to him, “Milk from goats is better than milk from cattle. There is a casein that goats have that is very nutritious and very good for children. Goats have it in a large quantity, and because of that, goat milk is more nutritious than cattle milk, and even human milk.
“However, it is not all species of goats that produce such milk. We are talking about ones that one can milk. There are breeds that produce more milk than what their kids can consume. They produce for a long period of time, and in large quantities. They include Saanen, Toggenburg, Nubians and Alpine. They are not found in Nigeria.
“Nigerians are not good at anything. We don’t think. Food security is something that nobody should joke with. You can only attain food security by engaging in agriculture. Nigeria doesn’t encourage this. We only enjoy to import.”
