A member of Igwe’s Cabinet in a community at Nsukka, Monday, narrated how he sold his Mercedes Benz 190 model due to high cost of premium motor spirit, otherwise called fuel.

Moses Makata said the cost of fueling his car became beyond his capacity, hence informing the sale of his car which he had driven for thirteen years. In his words, “Old Mercedes models consume fuel a lot. They are the best cars in terms of ruggedness. Whatever parts you change will last many years before they spoil again. But the problem is its fuel consumption. I had to sell my car last Friday because my lean resources are gradually being liquidated in fueling the car. My kind of job makes my daily movement inevitable.

“I was angry when people were pricing it N50, 000 at a sales stand. The highest was N90, 000. Somebody advised me to take it to people buying scraps. I drove the car to them at the mechanic village; they paid me N200, 000, and before my eyes, my car was compressed and loaded as scraps in the truck. I cried. I would have even removed the engine and the battery if I had known they would simply turn it into rubbish the moment I was paid.”

Makata, a retired headmaster, added that, “I immediately sourced funds in addition to my savings to purchase a fairly-used ladies’ machine, which is serving me better. A litre of fuel could take me to my place of work, and several other places. The car remains the best in terms of utility, but for me to survive, I feel I took the best decision in selling that car.”

Our correspondent reports that a litre of PMS sells between N670 and N690 at Nsukka.
