A retired soldier, Francis Dooga, 72, earlier this week killed himself in his compound in Makurdi. His reason is that things are difficult, and he could not come.

It was gathered that Dooga’s situation worsened after he was reportedly scammed of his savings.

Popularly called ‘Old Soldier’, the deceased reportedly committed the suicide at his home located opposite St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Nyiniongun, a suburb of Makurdi, Benue State capital.

It was gathered that he hanged himself on a tree on January 28 without leaving any note behind. His death caused commotion in the neighbourhood with residents pondering the circumstances surrounding his death.

A resident of the area said none of the man’s family members were around when he committed suicide.

Quoting the source, “It was when one of the family members came in around 6pm on Sunday that he saw the body of the retiree dangling on a tree within the house that he raised the alarm.

“It was the alarm that drew the attention of neighbours to the house.”

Another resident said the deceased complained of hardship after falling into the hands of people who defrauded him.
