The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nasarawa State, Corps Commander Lucie Samuel-Mhii, Wednesday, advocated the active involvement of commuters in ensuring safety on the roads.
Speaking during a programme, which focussed on ensuring safety on the roads during these ember months, the sector commander encouraged commuters to adhere to traffic rules and regulations by always using seat belts, avoiding distractions while driving, such as using mobile phones, as well as reporting hazardous road conditions and unsafe driving behaviors to authorities.
According to her, “The corps intends to create awareness about commuter involvement in road safety through town-hall meetings, roadshows, public education, and enlightenment activities at parks, as well as press briefings.
“Commuters are encouraged to check the safety standards of vehicles they use, including inspecting tyres, ensuring seat belt usage, and verifying that drivers are not under any influence before entering a vehicle,” she advised.
She said the active involvement of commuters in safety measures would lead to over 80% reduction in road crashes across the country.
On the newly launched mobile App by the corps, Mrs Samuel-Mhii said it was designed to prevent crashes, reduce injuries, gather real-time crash information, and provide accurate and reliable data for planning and decision-making.
In her words, “The App can monitor vehicle speed and issue alerts if the driver exceeds the prescribed limit. It also includes data on black spots and accident-prone areas, alerting drivers when they are within 2.5 kilometres of these zones. The App aims to enhance crash reduction and promote a better road safety culture in Nigeria.”
She emphasized the importance of commuters actively using the App and engaging with it to contribute to overall road safety.
She commended concerned authorities for the dual carriage road from Lafia to Abuja, noting that it had significantly reduced crashes and the number of breakdowns. She however emphasized the need for speed-calming devices and road signages to further improve safety.
