The Nasarawa Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps will embark on routine testing of drug and alcohol abuses among drivers to effectively monitor drug abuse in the state.
The Nasarawa Sector Commander of the corps, CC Lucie Samuel-Mhii, stated this on Friday while speaking on the outcome of pilot alcohol and drug tests carried out by the command at Yahaya Sabo Motor Park, Lafia, on Thursday.
It was gathered that only ten commercial drivers volunteered to undergo the spontaneous alcohol and drug tests organized by the Nasarawa Sector Command of FRSC at the park on Thursday out of hundreds of drivers who were approached for the exercise.
CC Lucie Samuel-Mhii stated that, “The alcohol and drug tests at Yahaya Sabo Motor Park were unprepared. This initiative is part of the command’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by impaired driving.
“The objective is to identify drivers under the influence of stimulants. The testing was carried out using the Alcohlizer, a reliable device designed to measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels.
“Although the exercise was unplanned, the command aimed to test as many drivers as possible. However, only ten drivers agreed to participate in the test. All ten drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The refusal of the remaining drivers to participate suggests a potential issue with drug use among those who avoided the test.”
She said with the reluctance of a majority of the drivers at the park to be tested, the command would implement testing exercises “as a monthly routine to more effectively address and monitor drug abuse among drivers.”
