The Senate chief whip, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, weekend, expressed concerns over the level of insecurity in South East and Nigeria in general.
Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, disclosed this on his verified Facebook page.
He regretted that insecurity has deprived many people of their sources of livelihood.
He stated, “I’m appealing to the governors of the Southeast geo-political zone, security agencies, traditional rulers and relevant stakeholders to unite and tackle the high rate of insecurity in our region and Nigeria at large.
“The data on security incidents in Abia State and Nigeria at large reflects the real agony of our citizens and communities, their pains and losses, and the fears and anxiety that have created considerable distress.
“I am deeply concerned about the impact of the state of insecurity on citizens’ safety, means of livelihood and the exercise of the rights of Abians, Nigerians, particularly the right to life, right to movement, and ultimately the country’s socio-economic development.”
On his efforts to curtail the trend, Orji said, “I have met with heads of security agencies to discuss the state of insecurity in our state and region.
“A few days ago, I also met with the Israeli ambassador to Nigeria to discuss security issues with him, which he promised to assist us with.”
He recalled that during his tenure as the governor of Abia State, ‘security of lives and property was one of my priorities and I was able to deal with insecurity using every instrument available to me’.
