Nigerians defend Prof Uju Anya who has come under attacks by the likes of Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder, for wishing dying Queen Elizabeth II an ‘excruciating death’.
Uju anchored her wish on the roles UK-led Queen played in the Biafran War, which the likes of Achebe described as an attempt to annihilate the Igbo race. She stated her position via her verified Twitter handle.
The Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed, berated Bezos’ position.
According to him, “Jeff Bezos that couldn’t forgive his own biological father is mad at Uju Anya for venting her anger. Double standard coz mehn this life no balance at all.”
Kachi Raphael wrote, “Woman of the moment, a full bloody Igbo woman, Lolo Uju Anya.. we celebrate her for being so bravely enough to speak up against tyranny without fears of subjugation.
“I stand with Uju Anya. We need more of her #monarchy #QueenElizabeth.”
Dr Maduka Chinemel wrote, “Prof Uju Anya reminded the British govt of how they ganged-up with Nigeria to deliberately starve to death millions of innocent children of Biafra; all because of hatred & crude oil.”
Ogbonna Celestine wrote, “Uju Anya, the woman with strong heart and a woman who loves her people and never forgets her history even when all things are working for her in a good country.
“I love ❤ Uju Anya, you have written your name in gold.”
Dayo Sogonru, PhD, predicts troubles fo Uju in his tweet. According to him, “My thoughts really go to Uju Anya because it is going to be some trying days ahead.
“The Western world only allows rejoicing at the deaths of leaders from Africa, the Middle East, China, and Eastern Europe. The death of any Western leader is a sacrosanct and sober affair.”
Recall that Uju tweeted shortly before Queen’s death that, “I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating.”
She re-tweeted shortly after Queen’s demise, “If anyone expects me to express anything but disdain for the monarch who supervised a government that sponsored the genocide that massacred and displaced half my family and the consequences of which those alive today are still trying to overcome, you can keep wishing upon a star.”
Carnegie Mellon University, USA, where she works, stated that her tweet does not represent the position of the institution.
Anya’s profile shows that she is a professor in applied linguistics, antiracist and feminist.
She wrote on her profile page that, “I left my marriage to save my life”, an indication she is a core feminist.
