Th National Universities Commission, acting on the orders of the federal government, Monday, directed the reopening of federal universities and immediate commencement of lectures.
The directive was given to vice-chancellors in a letter signed by the director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the executive secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
The letter was addressed to vice chancellors and copied to pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.
The letter ordered the VCs to ‘ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; restore the daily activities and routines of the various university campuses’.
This directive is coming as the Academic Staff Union of Universities had filed an appeal of stay of execution at the Appeal Court following the order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria on the ASUU to call off its seven-months’ old industrial action.
The strike began on 14th Feb. this year following FG’s failures to implement its various agreements with the union, including appropriate funding of university education in the country.
