Stakeholders at the just-concluded workshop for local government workers in Enugu State, Friday, pleaded with council chairmen in the state to establish livestock farms in their respective areas.
They also tasked the chairmen to create veterinary posts in their respective areas to enhance healthy and abundant animal production. According to them, rural farmers need the services of veterinary officers and agricultural extension workers for improved food production.
The event was organised by Enugu State Local Government Service Commission aimed at sensitizing its staff members to embrace agriculture as a way of improving their standard of living.
The programme was for agricultural superintendents and veterinary officers, among others.
The training, with the theme, ‘Animal Health as Tool for National Economic Diversification’, x-rayed other areas like the current veterinary practice in Nigeria and prospects; current challenges in trans-border ‘Epizootics’ and its negative effects on national economic growth; drug use, abuse and residue: the implications for economic diversification, as well as fundamental requirements in broiler production in Nigeria.
In attendance were nominees from all the local governments in the state. They commended the chairman of the commission, Prof Osy Okanya, for the opportunity.
The resource persons, A. Onah and
Dr Z Obayi, called on civil servants to embrace agriculture following the increasing cost of living. They also made cases for the government to make the farming sector more conducive.
