Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Okorodudu, former Nigerian boxer, has died at a Lagos hospital while waiting to be amputated on one of his legs. The surgery, which cost about N1.6m, was delayed over paucity of funds.
His colleagues under the group, Family United By Sports, tried raising funds for his amputation, but could not complete the sum until his death. The deceased’s family is indebted to the hospital at a sum of N.6m, forcing the health facility to hold the corpse of the veteran hostage.
It was gathered that Okorodudu had an ulcer on his foot that could not heal over the years, making amputation the sole option.
Okorodudu’s wife, Adenike, confirmed the news of his death to newsmen.
She said, “He is dead now but we still need to pay N600,000 to get his body out of the hospital.”
He was aged 64.
It was gathered that appeals made to Nigeria’s ministry of sports to help the deceased were not attended to.
