Senator Okey Ezea representing Enugu North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Wednesday, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint a native of the district a minister during the next batch.

Our correspondent reports that no minister of the Federal Republic has been appointed from Enugu North since 1999. Ezea said such appointment would right the wrong of past governments which marginalized the senatorial district.

He however commended Tinubu for appointing Chief Uche Nnaji from Enugu State a minister in his first batch. Nnaji is the standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections in the state.

Ezea, a lawyer, citing the constitution, said, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be a state based on the principles of democracy and social justice.

“The composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few states or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that government or in any of its agencies.”

Similarly, a socio-cultural organization, Enugu North Professionals For Good Governance, has appealed to Tinubu to appoint a minister from Enugu North to give the ‘marginalised’ zone a sense of belonging and inclusion.

Its president, Mr Emmanuel Ikechukwu Jonathan, said such gesture would make Tinubu a ‘father-figure to all’, adding that ‘equal treatment begets peaceful coexistence’.
