The Golden FC, Monday, won the 2022 edition of the Eha-Alumona Unity Cup. The club defeated Omeogor FC on penalties after a goalless draw.
The Golden FC goalkeeper also won the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper’s Award after saving two penalties. Chioma FC won the bronze after winning the third place game played earlier.
The overall winners went home with N250, 000; the runners-up and the third-place finishers got various cash rewards.
Eze, Paul Chukwunonso, the sponsor of the cup, said the goal was to create unity among all the villages of Eha-Alumona. He also called on well-meaning natives of the community to contribute their quotas in making life better for the people of the area.
In his words, “The tournament involves clubs in the entire Eha-Alumona in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State. The brain behind it is to sustain the unity in our community.
“We are impressed because our youths are happy with what is happening. It is not about rewards they get, but the spirit of competition that such tournaments bring to them.
“The good thing is that the players are brothers and friends who interract on a regular basis. I appeal to our people to help in moving our community forward through this kind of initiative. It mustn’t be football.
“Our people need some basic social amenities, which the government may not be able to readily provide. This is in area of electricity, potable water, access roads and human empowerment. Assisting in all these is to move our place and people forward.
“We have some government schools that need upgrading. Fixing them will make the future of our children better. I recently constructed a borehole to reduce the pains our people pass through looking for water.”
The sponsor was commended for organising the tournament. A spectator said, “We need more of this to promote and sustain love in our community. We can’t thank Capital Money (the sponsor) enough.”
